Industry Associations Explore Unification

A group of industry leaders from the Printing Industries of America and the National Association for Printing Leadership met in Marco Island, FL, just prior to the annual Vision 3 Summit to discuss merging operations. The groups cited several factors for the action: the economic conditions of the past several years, the ongoing contraction of the industry, and a response to calls for action from membership and suppliers.

A task force was formed with representatives from both the PIA and NAPL to create a new, single entity. It will develop a number of sub-committees to address a strategic plan, organization name, staffing, leadership, local representation, programs and location. The process is expected to take several months to complete.

The task force is co-chaired by Laura Lawton and Darren Loken, who are the current chairs of the PIA and NAPL respectively. In addition to Truncale and Makin, other members of the task force are: John Berthelsen, Suttle-Straus, Inc.; Tim Burton, Burton & Mayer, Inc.; Keith Kemp, Xerographic Digital Printing; Jules VanSant, Pacific Printing Industries; Niels Winther, Think Patented; and Nigel Worme, COT Media Group.

The CEOs of each organization, Joe Truncale and Michael Makin, have expressed support for the unification efforts. Members of each association are encouraged to continue support of their respective associations during the unification process.
